Ask The Director

Our package includes the removal from the place of death directly to "our own" crematorium facility, along with the care and custody while waiting for cremation to be authorized by next of kin or guardian and the Nova Scotia Medical Examiner’s office. (We do not subcontract other death-care providers to perform cremation) If removal is to be done outside 50 km, transportation charges may apply. It also includes an experienced Funeral Director to oversee every aspect of the cremation process.
You will also need Funeral Director Statements of Death to assist with settling the estate. This document will be required by any person or agency that requires “proof” that death has occurred. Most families require 6-8 copies. Forest Haven provides 12 Funeral Director’s Statements of Death in every package. Should you require more, we are only as far away as the phone. There will be no charge for additional statements, if required.
A Cremation Container/Casket is required by legislation for every person being cremated. It’s purpose is not only to maintain the dignity of the deceased, but also to protect the health & safety of the crematorium operator. Forest Haven includes this simple corrugated container in our cremation package.
We purchase memorial urns in quantity, therefore we can extend the savings to our clients. In most cases, our products are comparable in price. If you choose not to purchase an urn at this time, a simple corrugated container is provided and is suitable for burial, scattering or maintaining until later decisions are made.
Funeral homes were designed and built primarily to host traditional funerals. Although they offer cremation services; their overhead expenses such as hearses, limousines, and visitation rooms are fixed costs. A cost that everyone must absorb even when the use of such facilities or equipment is unnecessary.

Online Memorials

We can create a customized, online memorial for you to share with family and friends. The memorial includes the obituary and any photographs you wish to provide. It will serve as a place for visitors to post condolences, share memories, upload photos, and light candles in honour of your loved one.

Tribute Videos

We can produce a personal tribute video that can be played online. Simply provide us with the photographs you want to include and we will transform them into a video celebration of your treasured memories. DVDs or digital files of the video are also available directly from our website. There is a one time charge of 50.00 for set-up & design.

Ordering Flowers

We make it easy for friends and family to send flowers to your home or service to honour your loved one. We have partnered with local florists to offer the convenience of ordering directly from the obituary page of our website. You can also use this feature to select the flowers you would like at the service. This is a secure way to choose beautiful arrangements from the privacy and comfort of your home.

DEATH OF "THE FUNERAL"

The way we approach death today is rapidly changing. Fewer people are opting for a traditional embalmed-body funeral, instead choosing informal and personal celebrations under their own direction at a time when all the family can be home.

About 80% of Nova Scotian's now choose cremation over traditional burial. Part of this change is cost - with a traditional burial averaging $8,000, but there is more to it than that. People want to express their own values, which are more informal, less religious, and more environmentally conscious than past generations.

The shift in funeral practices is likely to accelerate, as Baby Boomers come to the end of their lives and millennial's reshape culture to their own circumstances and values. In fact, millennial's are waiting longer to marry, have children and buy their first homes — leaving them with limited income to plan for retirement and end-of-life. Add to that, the decline in their attendance at religious services and a greater demand for personalization, it seems likely that traditional funerals may one day soon be a thing of the past.
