Tom & Marquerite Penny

d. April 21, 2020

We are heartbroken to announce the passing of our parents, Tom and Marguerite (MacSween) Penny on April 21, 2020 at their home in Sydney.
Thomas, born in Sydney on April 12,1942, was the son of the late Clifford and Alice (Poirier) Penny and worked until his retirement as a Salesman for W.A. MacLeod Son. Marguerite, born in Sydney on June 13,1943, was the daughter of the late Roy and Shirley (Munroe) MacSween and worked until her retirement as a teacher at Riverview Rural High School.
Our parents were married 58 years and together they enjoyed spending time with friends and family in Boisdale; campfires, tarbish and the Bras d'Or lakes were the backgrounds to our summers. They also enjoyed family gatherings for any occasion.
Mom was meant to teach and took great pride in teaching; she would often remember students she taught when meeting them out in the community. She loved to read anything she could get her hands on and the library was a weekly trip. Mom also encouraged us to have our friends at the house so our house was often filled.
Dad loved people and could strike up a conversation with anyone. He loved to bowl, play hockey and watch any form of sport. Dad would spend his winters building a skating rink for us in the backyard that the neighbourhood would enjoy. Throughout his life Dad volunteered in minor hockey, scouts and was currently volunteering  at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 12.
Tom and Marguerite are survived by their three daughters, Sheryl and Lee-Anne of Dartmouth and Lesley (David Martell) of Prime Brook; grandson Connor Martell .Marguerite is also survived by siblings Ruth (Gary) Morrison, Laird MacSween and Mimi Horianopoulos and multiple nieces and nephews.Tom is also survived by Lorne, Gerald (Florence), Ron, Wayne (Mary), Frank, Philip (Marina) and Anne (Joseph) Mombourquette along with many nieces and nephews.
Besides their parents, they are predeceased by Marguerite's siblings Roy and Russell MacSween along with sister-in- law Roberta Penny.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Forest Haven Memorial Gardens. Donations in their memory may be made to Cape Breton Community Housing Charitable Foundation or The Heart and Stroke foundation.
