Ruth Margaret Ganaway

April 29, 1939 ~ April 28, 2021 (age 81)

It is with heavy hearts that we the family announce the passing of Ruth
Margaret Ganaway (nee MacMillan) on April 28th, 2021, one day shy of her

82nd birthday in Sydney, Nova Scotia. Ruth was the wife of the late Joseph
Ganaway. Ruth was born in Marble Mountain on April 29,1939; she was the
daughter of the late Robert and Hilda MacMillan (Dowsey). Ruth lived the
majority of her adult life in Fourchu, Cape Breton.
Ruth is survived by her sister Elsie Lush (Percy) and is predeceased by her
siblings Ida (Johnny), Stuart (Millie), Percy, Lewis, Joshua, Murdock, Gordon
and Norman. Ruth is survived by her five sons Andrew (Maggie), Russell,
Neil, Allen, Victor (Michelle) and daughter Val, her grandchildren Laura,
Meaghan, Danielle, Coady, Katrina, Ocean, Alyssa, Sam, Riley, Zach, Jessie,
Josie, several great Grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Ruth is also survived by her closest friend Patricia Young.
Ruth was a devoted mother and homemaker for 55 plus years. As a young
woman mom worked and lived in Boston and later returned to Cape Breton,
where she worked at the Cove Nursing Home. Ruth had many stories to
share about her adventures of working in the “Boston States” and spoke
fondly of the friends she made there. Ruth became fast friends with Reta
Dermody while residing in Sydney, the family will forever be thankful for the
love and support Reta showed our mom.
Ruth was known for her love of animals, preparing meals for family and
friends and her quiet easy-going nature. Ruth's dedication to her family was
apparent with the constant unconditional love, affection and support she so
easily provided each of us.
Ruth will be greatly missed by all that knew her, especially her children.
Although Mom held all of her children’s hands for awhile, she will forever be
in our hearts.
Special thanks to the staff at Harbourstone Enhanced Care Facility for the
support they provided to Ruth and her family. Due to Covid 19 restrictions
there will be no funeral. A celebration of Ruth’s life will be scheduled at a
later date. Committal Service at Malagawatch Cemetery will also occur at a
later date.
