Rhodena "Arlene" Fraser

August 29, 1942 — March 24, 2020

It is with deep sorrow that we, the family announce the passing of Rhodena "Arlene" (Lively) Fraser in hospital at the age of 77, on March 24. Born in Sydney, she was the Daughter of the late Alex and Mary (MacDonald) Lively and step mother, Eunice (MacDonald) Lively.  Arlene attended Holy Angels High School in Sydney where she graduated from Grade 12 in 1962.  Soon after graduation she married Dan Fraser and began a life of travel and working in various towns and cities in Canada and in Germany due to the number of military postings they received.

After 35 years and a total of 13 postings, Arlene and Dan moved back to Sydney where they built a home on Lingan Road close to family and the friends they knew for many years and set about to develop new relationships around Cape Breton.  Arlene was dedicated to her family and always ensured they were loved and cared for beyond any reasonable expectations.  Her husband, daughters, grandchildren and great grand daughter were the most important people in her life. She also had a great deal of love for her parents, sisters and brothers.  Arlene enjoyed quilting and the friendship of the ladies of the Breton Quilters at the Cape Breton School of Crafts.  She was disappointed whenever her health prevented her from attending the Monday quilting sessions where she learned so much from the other ladies and enjoyed their stories and laughter. She also enjoyed the monthly luncheons with her Holy Angels Friends.

Although a victim of Lupus and other ailments, Arlene never let these conditions drag her down other than to take time out to recuperate.  Riding her ATV, fishing, downhill and cross-country skiing, walking, camping and other outdoor activities were enjoyed by her and she ensured others taking part enjoyed themselves.  She also loved rock and roll dancing, swimming, and was a superior cook capable of whipping up a meal for unexpected guests on a moments notice.

Arlene is survived by her husband of 57 years, Dan Fraser, her two daughters, Marie Fraser (Nick Nicholson) of Sydney and Paula Fraser, (John Lake) of Ottawa grandchildren Tyler Puddifant, (Erica Smith) Dartmouth, Koral Fraser and Chayce Fraser, Ottawa.  Her brother, Jackie Lively, Sydney sister Virginia (Bob Pawlik), Saskatoon, her brother, Barry Lively, (Maureen Young) Calgary, sisters, Sandra, (Charlie Malinowski), Joyce Lively, (Kevin MacNeil) and Michelle, (Gary Ross) all of Sydney.

Arlene was predeceased by her parents, Alex Lively in 1976, Mary (MacDonald) Lively in 1947, and her Step Mother Eunice (MacDonald) Lively, in 2014 brothers, Sandy (Cleta), Kevin, Lawrie (Joyce)

Cremation has taken place.  Due to the Coronavirus Virus, there will be no visitation or funeral.  Interment at Resurrection Cemetery will take place at a later date.  A celebration of life will be announced when the effects of the Coronavirus Virus are over.

Donations in Arlene’s name can be made to the Hospice Care Society of Cape Breton or charity of choice.
