It is with broken hearts we announce the death of Phil (Philip) Carter. Phil passed away on May

31, 2021 at his residence in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia surrounded by family. Born in

Newfoundland in 1954 to loving parents, Douglas and Piney Carter. Phil was an exemplary

family man, the ultimate father, husband, grampy, son, brother, and friend. Phil always made his

two kids his upmost priority. He was their biggest supporter, never failing to show up at his son

Brent’s every ball game or Scouts trip, and taking his daughter, Roseline and her friends to

stand in ticketmaster line ups at all hours of the night.

He and the love of his life, Sylvia, welcomed everyone into their home with open arms. Many

nights spent with family playing rummoli, Carter family Christmas parties, dinner parties with

the Calgary friends and large family gatherings are memories we will all cherish. Phil was

happiest when with his family; on a beach holding hands with his wife, feeding his grandchildren

ice cream, playing crib with his dad and brother, golfing with his friends and cheering on the

Calgary Flames. He also spent many years partially frozen, being the dedicated “iceman” of

Whitehorn, ensuring that all the kids in the neighbourhood had great ice to skate on.

Phil grew up in Nova Scotia, raised his family in Calgary, and moved back to Nova Scotia with

  his wife to enjoy an early semi-retired life. Surviving is his wife of almost 40 years, Sylvia;

children Roseline (Steve), Brent (Patricia), his niece who was like a daughter, Nicole; three

grandchildren, Kaesen, Aubrey and Noah; five sisters, Nora (Brian), Daphne (Roy), Paulette

(Brian), Hilda (Norm), and Dulcie (George); two brothers, Doug (Kelly) and Lawrence; Sylvia’s

family, including Wendy (Colin) MacNeil; and many nieces and nephews, cousins, and long-time

friends who he loved very much. He was predeceased by his mother, Piney Carter.

A private family service will be held. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to: Terry Fox

Foundation, Victoria Order of Nurses, or Palliative Care Cape Breton.

Sylvia, Roseline and Brent would like to thank the palliative care team and the VON for their

  incredible support and care.
