Belva Hooper

October 10, 1957 — April 21, 2021

It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of Belva Hooper, 63, on April 21, 2021, after a short battle with lung cancer. Born on October 10,1957 in Sydney, NS, she was the daughter of Neil and Christine Ferguson, and was fostered by Harold and Pat Buchanan in the early 1970's. Belva worked as a legal secretary for many years before arthritis took away her ability to type.
Belva loved to garden and birdwatch, and passed these hobbies onto her 3 children. In her younger years, she played on a ladies dart league and she really cherished those nights out with the girls.
We all have great memories of camping trips around the island and trips to the shore to have bonfires and roast hot dogs. She loved nothing more than watching a good thunderstorm roll in off the water, which is probably why we all turn off the lights and watch the lightning out the windows whenever there's a storm.
We will miss her rigatoni, her laughter, and most of all, having heart-to-hearts with her at the kitchen table over a cup of tea.
She is survived by her husband, Wendel her children, Andrea (Jason), Sarah (Tyler), and Michael (Renee), and her grandkids, the lights of her life, Owen, Sydney and Aubrey.
She is also survived by sisters Cora (Roy), and Marie, her brothers, Sheldon (Irene), and Kevin (Arlene), her step-sister, Christene (Howie), and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Neil and Christine Ferguson, foster parents Pat and Harold Buchanan and brother, Nelson.  We would like to thank Palliative Care Team and the VON ,and staff of IMCU for the care they provided to our mom during her illness.
We'll miss you, Ma, but you'll always be in our hearts.
Cremation will take place with no visitation, as per her wishes. A small family gathering will take place at a later date. Donations can be made in her memory to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation or to the Canadian Cancer Society.
