It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of William “Billie” Gilliam on November 8th, who passed away unexpectedly while courageously battling Glioblastoma.
Born to the late William and Catherine (Campbell) Gilliam, Billie grew up in Number 11, Glace Bay, with a heart full of compassion and a calling to care for others. A graduate of St. Michael’s High School (Class of 1985) and St. Rita’s School of Nursing (Class of 1989), Billie dedicated his life to helping those in need. Over his remarkable 35-year career with the Nova Scotia Health Authority and 33 years with the VON, he touched countless lives with his warmth, skill, and kindness. He took great joy in spoiling his patients in the Renal Dialysis Unit with his delicious homemade baked goods, a simple gesture that brought comfort, smiles, and warmth to those in his care. His patients and colleagues alike knew him as a nurse who not only healed with his hands but comforted with his heart.
Billie is survived by his children Chelsea (Jordan) and Braeden (Emma), and his pride and joy—his beautiful granddaughter Myrah, who brought endless light to his life. He will also be deeply missed by his siblings Melvin (Ellen), Wilhelmina (Eddie), Viola (Brian), Sharon (Raymond), in-laws Dawn (Hank), Danette, David, Darryl (Maria) and many nieces and nephews. Billie was predeceased by his sister Cathy and brother Joseph Emanuel in infancy.
Billie shared a lifelong bond of friendship with his former wife, mother of his children, and forever friend, Darlene Gilliam. He will also be fondly remembered by his special friend, Ann Winters, for the companionship they shared. His in-laws, Cecil and Nellie LeBlanc, were like second parents to him and held a special place in his heart. Billie’s love extended beyond people to the many animals who shared his home. They brought him great comfort and joy and will miss him dearly, especially Hazel.
The family would like to express heartfelt thanks to Dr. Chow for his exceptional care, compassion, and dedication throughout Billie’s illness. In keeping with Billie’s generous and selfless nature, he has donated his body to science at the Dalhousie Faculty of Medicine, continuing his lifelong commitment to helping others even after his passing.
Billie will be remembered for his gentle spirit, quick smile, and unwavering dedication to those he loved and cared for. His legacy of kindness and compassion will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
A celebration of Billie’s life will be held at the Glace Bay Fire Hall on November 23rd from 2-4. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Gabriel Center or a charity of one’s choice in his memory.
Forever loved, deeply missed, and always remembered.
