It is with great sadness we the family, announce the passing of Sheldon Poirier, aged 70, who passed away suddenly on January 2nd, 2026 at the QE2 Infirmary in Halifax. Sheldon was raised and lived in the small town of Gardiner Mines.
Sheldon was predeceased by his brothers, Tommy, who died as an infant (1953) and Blair who passed away on October 27th, 2025. He was also predeceased by his parents, Alec and Sadie Poirier (McMullin).
Sheldon is survived by his loving wife of 48 years Margo Poirier (Vassallo). Margo was the love of his life and he was her best friend. Together they built an amazing life full of love, laughter and devotion. He is also survived by his children, Melissa MacPhee and Dave Poirier (Amanda) and his three grandchildren, Ethan, Ayden and Little Sheldon.
He was best known for his ability to either meet or make friends anywhere he went, his considerable “gift to gab”, and his love for muscle cars, game shows and tarabish. Sheldon loved going to car shows, playing the guitar, “tinkering” around the house, mowing the lawn and helping friends and family. Sheldon was also a long time member of the band “Mario and the Marionettes”. While warm and full or humour, he was also famously known for his dislike of high winds, barking dogs and poorly skilled drivers – details that brought many laughs and fond memories to those who knew him best.
Sheldon dedicated almost 30 years of service to the Sydney Steel Plant until its closure, before continuing his career with Guardian Drugs/Sterling Mall and later the Department of National Defence, from which he retired.
Sheldon’s legacy lives on through the countless lives he touched, the friendships he built, and in the hearts and minds of those of us left behind.
Cremation has taken place, a kitchen party in his honour will take place at a later date.
