It is with deep love and sadness that we announce the passing of Sheldon, a devoted husband, father, foster parent, and friend, who left this world August 18, 2025, surrounded by family.
A lifelong resident of Dominion, Cape Breton, Sheldon worked faithfully with DEVCO, providing for his family with dedication and his own unique sense of humor. Beyond his career, he lived a life rooted in service, faith, and joy. A proud member of the Immaculate Conception Parish, he gave generously of his time as a religious education teacher, Eucharistic Minister, and member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society. His faith was also nurtured through his involvement in the Antigonish Diocese Cursillo and Challenge movements, where he formed lifelong friendships.
For over 30 years, Sheldon and his beloved wife, Norma (Woods) MacDonald opened their hearts and home as foster parents, creating a legacy of love that will live on in the many children they cared for.
Those who knew him will forever remember his warm and plentiful hugs, his playful teasing, and his ability to turn any day into a celebration—especially if birthday cake was involved. He was a “big kid” at heart, bringing laughter, joy, and light wherever he went. He loved long drives with Norma, never passed up ice cream, and could often be heard saying his favorite phrase, “C’est si bonne!”
Sheldon lived a life of simple but profound abundance -abundance of faith, laughter, generosity, and love. His greatest gift was making people feel cherished, whether through a kind word, a joke, or one of his famous “Poppy” hugs.
He will be deeply missed by his family, foster children, parish community, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. Though he has left this world, his joy and love remain, woven into the hearts of those he touched.
Sheldon is survived by his wife Norma (Woods) MacDonald, his daughter Colleen Porter (Norm) and her children Makayla and Jenna, and son Shelly MacDonald (Lisa) and his children Brandon and Katie. Also survived by foster daughter Natalie Gillis and her children Nathan and Brooke and special grandchildren Joshua MacLeod and Chris Cameron. Also survived by siblings Joseph MacDonald (Irene) of Ottawa and Arlene Fancey (Gary) of New Waterford. Norma and Sheldon received love and support from sisters Sharon, Evelyn, and Lorraine. Additionally, Sheldon has many nieces and nephews, and was known to all as Poppy. Not to be forgotten, was his cherished pup, Princess Jasmine, who he would often say “ I love you. Sun and moon and stars above you”.
Sheldon has been a devoted member of a men's group reunion for over 25 years with four special brothers in Christ: Malcom, Charlie, Rick, and Jackie.
Sheldon is predeceased by his parents Joseph and Anna (McLean) MacDonald, his sisters Bertha MacDonald and Myrna McKenzie, and foster daughter Natasha Cunningham.
The family has requested in lieu of flowers, kindly direct donations to Immaculate Conception Parish in Bridgeport. We are asking all those who were touched by Sheldon, to share a big warm “Poppy” hug with your loved ones.
Service will be held Friday, August 22, 2025, 11 am at Immaculate Conception church in Bridgeport. The family will be present at the church at 10am to accept condolences. Reception to follow immediately.
