Groves Point

Obituary

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Russell Raymond Steffens of Groves Point, who lost his battle to cancer on October 30, 2026, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, in Sydney.

Russie, as he was well known, lived a very adventurous life filled with amazing stories of love and laughter. He lived life to the fullest, worked hard, and made the most of each day with what he had.

His gifts of talent contained many facets to his personality, which he shared wholeheartedly with others. He enriched things with just a simple touch, suggestion or a good laugh.

His greatest passions in life were old cars, horses, and his homeland of Cape Breton.

If we were to sum up his life, we would compare him to a rare bird, one that flew and soared through life, making a unique pattern that some loved or not. Russell contained a free spirit with an out to lunch sense of humour that hated boundaries.

He hated rules and regulations and made it a main goal in life to disobey a few. He was the type that could find trouble in a church and argue that there was more harm in repenting than in the crime itself.

Russie portrayed a unique character in his structure that made us realize that each of us is here to write our own storyline. Take and put into it, what you want and not worry about the next feller. He always said “who cares“ no one is no more then anyone else, we are here to learn how to evolve, grow and realize that happiness is not in the absence of the problems that life throws at you, it’s having the strength and stability to deal with them.

We are going to miss our loving, hardworking, hard-on-the-head protector. He was one in a million. And we dearly loved his crazy ass.

He leaves to mourn his wife, Sharon (Walsh), step-kids, Kodie Glavine (Courtney), Michael Glavine (Nikki), grandchildren Briella, Nixon Jaxon, & Maddox. His mother Isabel Steffens, sister Kelly Anne (Eric Coakley), nephew and niece Colby & Erin-Rae Coakley. His amazing friends Coke & Victoria, and his beautiful aunt Isobel Ferguson. Predeceased by his father Russell Steffens.

Celebration of life will take place in Washabuck in August of 2027.
