It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Richard Ainsley Rowter, 84 on May 11, 2025, at Hospice Cape Breton, Sydney, Nova Scotia.
Richard was born September 19, 1940, in Maitland Bridge, Annapolis County, NS. He was the son of Ainsley Rowter and Alma (Fancy) (Rowter) Walmbolt.
Growing up on the South Shore of Nova Scotia fostered Richard’s love of the outdoors, the woods, woodworking and gardening. He was known as a true gentleman with a fun-loving side and a great sense of humor.
Richard’s career as a teacher in Quebec and Pembroke, Ontario spanned over 20 years before moving to Cape Breton in 1981. He lived in Boularderie for many years owning Seal Island Campground and later operating a lumber business. He was a skilled craftsman and woodworker.
Richard is survived by his wife of 59 years, Carol (Brown); his two daughters, Tanya (Steve), Creston, BC, Alison, Sydney River, NS and his grandson, his pride and joy, Jacob Rowter-MacNeil, the only grandchild.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his only brother Wayne (Maitland Bridge).
Cremation has taken place and a family service will be held at a later date.
Donations in Richard’s memory can be made to Hospice, Cape Breton.
The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, staff and volunteers of Hospice Cape Breton for their amazing care and compassion for Richard and his family during his time there.
