It is with broken hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Peter Christopher Smith on April 7, 2025, in Frenchvale, Nova Scotia, just one week before his 58th birthday. His loss has come as a shock to all who knew and loved him.
Born on April 14, 1967, in Liverpool, Nova Scotia, Peter was raised in Port Mouton and went on to live in Dartmouth, Sherbrooke, and eventually Cape Breton—leaving memories and meaningful connections in every community he touched. Peter began fishing with his father at the age of 9, and the ocean quickly became the place where he felt most at peace. Over the years, he worked as a fisherman, human support worker, and cook—roles that reflected his dedication, compassion, and resilience.
Though he faced many challenges in life, Peter never gave up. He worked hard to better himself and, in doing so, helped others find hope and healing too. During his time at Talbot House in Frenchvale, he transformed his own life and became a source of strength for many. He was, in the truest sense, a hero—one with a kind soul and a heart that loved deeply, even if it was often misunderstood.
Peter had a special connection to animals—so much so that his family joked he was a real-life Disney Princess. Every animal, wild or domestic, seemed to gravitate toward him, sensing the gentleness he carried. Whether it was his beloved dog Babes, or the countless animals that simply trusted him, Peter’s quiet bond with creatures big and small was something remarkable.
He will be deeply missed by his parents, Philip Smith and Myla Mitchell; his children, Alexandrea Smith (Chelsea Hutt) and Christian Smith; his grandson, Dakoda Smith; and his brother, Craig Smith (Sonya). He is now at peace, reunited with Babes and carried forever in our hearts.
We’ll forever miss his familiar greetings—“What’s goin’ on, girl?” and “That’s right, bub”—his humour, his warmth, and his unwavering love.
A celebration of life and ash spreading will take place in Queens County this summer. Details will be shared for all who wish to attend.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Peter’s memory can be made to Talbot House in Frenchvale, a place that gave him healing and purpose—and where he gave the same to others.
