Neil Martin MacDonald passed away on May 27, 2026, in the "An Cala" palliative care unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, surrounded by his Family and Friends.
Born on August 16, 1933 to George Gladstone (1894-1971) and Pamela (Baker) (1904-1994). He weighed less than three pounds and was not expected to live, but with care and love from his parents, he survived.
The family moved from St. Esprit, Richmond County to Alexandra Street, in 1939 when his father began work at Sydney Steel Plant.
Following his graduation from Sydney Academy in 1953, he began a career in sales. He worked for Eaton's and Woolco in the shoe department. He spent twenty years working for Radio Shack, at the Sydney Shopping Center, Mayflower Mall and Glace Bay. Retiring in 1998.
He loved and welcomed many cats into his home over the years and fondly remembered them all. He especially missed his Buddy "George".
An avid berry picker, he enjoyed his outing in search of strawberries, blueberries, bakeapples, cranberries', his favorite locations along the rugged coast of Richmond County.
He enjoyed reading, playing his guitar, Tarbish, and darts. He was a long-time member of the Brookshaven and St. Alban's Dart Leagues.
He is predeceased by his wife of 61 years Wilma Belle (Morrison) in 2018. Brothers David (1964) & Tom (2017). Brothers-in-Law Lawrence and Kenneth Morrison (2016)
He is survived by his three sons, Scott (Karen), their children, Victoria and Cody, Calgary, Greg (Suzanne) Sydney & Sheldon (Annabelle), Antigonish. Neil also leaves behind his stepchildren; Edward, Debbie, Derek (Karen), Jennifer (Jonathan), and eight grandchildren.
Dad is fondly remembered by his brother Rev. Donald J. (Late Margorie), sisters Marian (Late William), Jean (Late Forrest) McLeod & sister-in-law Bernice (Late Tom) MacDonald all of Sydney as well as many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital & special friends Debbie Ross and Mike Spooney for their care and support over the years.
A huge thanks to Don Morrison for his kind and compassionate care for Dad over the past six weeks. And thanks to the lovely neighbors on Alexandra St.
Cremation has taken place and a funeral will be held at a later date.
