With immense sorrow, we say goodbye to a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend.

Wayne “Burger” McDonald, age 71, of Glace Bay, passed away peacefully after a short battle with cancer. His family is deeply saddened by his passing but comforted in knowing that his battle has ended.

Wayne grew up in Reserve Mines and was the son of the late Melvin and Josephine McDonald. As a young man, Wayne was heavily involved in baseball in his community where he earned the distinction of Coach of the Year, an honour he carried with pride for many years.

Wayne loved music and was rarely far from a song. He enjoyed life’s simple pleasures, including playing darts, watching all kinds of sports, and cheering on the New York Islanders, or whichever team happened to be in first place that year. Above all, he cherished time spent with family. One of his favourite traditions was gathering each week with his brothers and sisters in his brother’s garage, sharing stories, laughter, and a few beers. He also loved horseshoes and won more than his fair share of matches.

For more than 30 years, Wayne worked at the Town Daycare in Glace Bay. A familiar face to staff, children, and families alike, he took great pride in his work and enjoyed being part of a place that played such an important role in the community.

Wayne will be remembered for his sharp sense of humour, his love for his family, and his gift for finding laughter in every situation. Even during his final days, he continued to crack jokes and bring smiles to those around him, a testament to the strength and spirit that defined him throughout his life.

Left to mourn his passing are his wife, Joan; his daughters, Charlene (Brian MacLeod) and Amanda; brothers Francis, Darrell (Diane), and Michael; sisters Margaret (Fred Sampson) and Marlene (Dennis Chipman); nieces Tonya and Marisa; nephews Jamie, Teddy, Jeffrey, Thomas, Dale, and Adam; and his two grandchildren, Caleb and Quinn.

In keeping with Wayne’s wishes, the family will hold a private celebration of life.

The family extends their heartfelt thanks to everyone who helped care for Wayne during his illness, including the staff of the palliative care unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Their kindness, compassion, and support carried us through these difficult days and will never be forgotten.
