It is with the saddest of hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Mary Florence Woodman on July 27th, 2023. She was 83. Born and raised in Glace Bay, Mary was the eldest daughter of Michael and Frances (Casey) MacKinnon.
Mary loved politics and later in life was active within the provincial and federal campaign scene. Her memory for people and their stories was remarkable. Her compassion and empathy were limitless – she always took the time to listen; to hear what you had to say and, at times, offer sound advice. It was commonplace for a stranger to tell her their life story when they first met, and often while Harry was waiting in the car.
Her quick wit and sense of humour meant she was never at a loss for words. Always an advocate for those she believed were being treated unfairly or rudely. Beware the rude person when Mary was within earshot.
An incredibly strong woman, in spirit and in faith, she often credited this to the examples her parents set, whom she loved dearly. Music and painting brought her much joy and peace; she felt music was life sustaining.
She leaves behind her three children Andrea (Dan), Steven, and Casey (Peter), brother Patrick (Sheila), sister Joan (late Vincent) and stepson Mark (Dawn). Grandchildren, Garrett, Kate, Abby, Kirsten, Brogan, Alyssa, and Krishna Jivani. She was predeceased by her loving husband Harry and stepsons Sean and David.
“I was loved, and loved in return.”
Funeral Services will be held at St. Anne’s Parish, Glace Bay on August 14th, 2023, at 2 pm. followed by a small reception at the church. Burial will be at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens on Grand Lake Rd.
