Mary Ellen Carter (O’Dea) passed away peacefully with family by her side on March 4, 2026, in the Cape Breton Regional Hospital at the age of 77.
Born December 14, 1948 in Bishop’s Falls NL, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Clara (Bragg) O’Dea.
Mary was a devoted mother, grandmother and one of Jehovah's Witnesses for over 40 years. A long-time seamstress, she later worked with “Persons with Disabilities Partnership”, supporting individuals with disabilities returning to the workplace. Despite living with effects of polio from a young age, she never allowed it to limit her. She was a great lover of animals and gardening.
She is survived by her son Billy (Vicky) Howie Centre; her daughter Cindy (Neil) Cameron Halifax; granddaughters Christine, Howie Centre and Caitlin (Jarod), East Bay; sisters, Hazel, Doreen, and Judy; brothers Mike and Eddie; and dear friend Bonnie.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Leroy Carter.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Forest Haven Memorial Gardens. A funeral service will be held via Zoom on March 14, 2026 at 2 PM.
