Obituary

It is with profound sadness and hearts full of love that we announce the passing of Kenneth Charles “Kenny” Redquest, a devoted father, grandfather, partner, brother, and friend. Kenny passed away at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital on October 1, 2026, at the age of 69, surrounded by loved ones, following a short but courageous battle with cancer. Born on October 4, 1956, to Stephen and Dorthy Redquest, Kenny lived a life defined by hard work, determination, laughter, and an unwavering love for his family.

An honest and dedicated worker, Kenny brought pride and care to everything he did. In 1988, a devastating workplace accident left him with severe injuries to his leg and foot. Although doctors told him he would never walk again, Kenny refused to give up. Through extraordinary determination and courage, he learned to walk independently once more—a testament to the strength that carried him throughout his life.

In the years that followed, he put his talents to work in mechanics, vehicle detailing, and keeping things running smoothly. He spent many years with K & L Trucking, working until the time of his passing. Whether measuring driveways for paving or plowing snow, Kenny was always on the go, taking pride in his work and helping keep others working, too. Kenny earned the respect and friendship of countless people. “Such a great guy” was something heard often, and the steady stream of visitors during his final days reflected just how deeply he was loved and how many lives he had touched.

Gabarus held a special place in Kenny’s heart. Having spent much of his childhood there, he continued to find happiness at “The Shack,” surrounded by some of the best friends a man could ask for. He also cherished his annual trips to Newfoundland and always looked forward to returning. His nephew Tommy shared a particularly close bond with him, with their adventures and shenanigans creating treasured memories.

Kenny is survived by his loving partner, Maureen, and her family, Patrick (Ashley), Harper, and Elliot; his son, Jason (Marie); his grandchildren, Keigan and Taylor; his brother, Ranny; his sisters, Theresa Ann and Marguerite (Freddy); his brother-in-law, Nick; and his sisters-in-law, Rea (Marina) and Heather. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends who held a special place in his heart.

He was predeceased by his parents, Stephen Redquest & Dorthy Power; his wife, Christine; his sister, Cathy; his sisters-in-law, Mary, Mae, Sandra, Shirley, and Betty; and his brothers-in-law, George, Wayne, Roland, Tom, Gordon, and John.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to the doctors, nurses, and staff of palliative care at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital for the compassion and kindness that made Kenny’s final days comfortable and peaceful.

Also, to Father Evo DiPierro for all his love and support and for being a great neighbor to Kenny.

Kenny leaves behind a lifetime of laughter, a lasting example of courage, and a family who will forever carry his love with them. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.

Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Kenny’s life will be held on Thursday, October 15, 2026, at Saint Theresa’s Roman Catholic Church, 381 Whitney Avenue, Sydney, NS. Visitation will take place from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., followed by a service at 11:00 a.m., with Father Evo DiPierro officiating.

A short graveside service will follow immediately for those wishing to attend at, Forrest Haven Memorial Gardens so we can walk and accompany Kenny to his final place of rest.

Following the service, beginning at 12pm family and friends are invited to gather on the basement level of the Ashby Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 138, at 35 State Street, Sydney, to share stories, cherish memories, and celebrate Kenny’s life and the love and laughter he brought to so many.
