Joseph Thomas Maroun

January 3, 1939 — April 21, 2024

Sydney

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Joseph Thomas (Butch) Maroun on April 21, 2024 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital at age 85. He was the youngest son of Thomas and Mary (nee Joseph) Maroun born January 3, 1939. Butch was well known to the downtown and surrounding community as proprietor of Maroun’s Snack Bar on Townsend St., where he welcomed everyone who came in for a cup of coffee, a sandwich, and witty conversation. After retirement in the mid 90’s, he and his beloved wife Molly enjoyed golfing, curling and watching their Blue Jays play on TV. Butch made many friends during his life, and always offered wise counsel to those that asked. With every phone call to catch up he spoke with fondness towards his James St neighbours, and our family would like to thank them for the kindness they showed him, especially Karen & Nick Epifano, who he particularly adored.

He was predeceased by sisters Amy (Zurawski), Mae (Greene), Martha (Smith), Adele (Stroud), Lillian (Hogan), brother John Norman Maroun, and his wife Molly (nee Merner). Butch is survived by his sisters Bess (Horan), Shirley (Lewis), Virginia (MacNeil), brother Reverend Dr. Albert Maroun as well as numerous nieces, nephews, grand nieces & nephews, and great grand nieces and nephews.

Thank you to Dr. Brendan McCarville, who was a helpful guide to the family, answering the many questions we had while ensuring Butch had the best care. We are grateful to the staff of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, both on the acute care and palliative care wards, who went over and above to provide much needed comfort in his final days.

Interment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery on Oct. 26, 2024 at 1pm.
