1959 Joan Walker 2025

Joan Marie Walker

February 25, 1959 — December 15, 2025

It is with heavy hearts and deep sadness that the family of Joan Marie Walker announce her passing on December 15, 2025, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, surrounded by her children and best friend.

Joan was the daughter of the late Francis and Catherine Walker of Saint Agnes Avenue. She will be lovingly remembered for her fun-loving spirit, her incredible green thumb, and the beautiful garden beds she created, each one a reflection of her creativity, and care. Joan had a special gift for making things grow and flourish, whether it was her flowers, or the people around her. She also found joy in painting, baking, and was a big animal lover. Joan was always decorating her space, always adding warmth and beauty wherever she was.

Some of Joan’s most treasured memories were made on fishing trips with her lifelong best friend and companion, Wilfred “Bubbie” Mercier, and during trips to Bible camp with Jess and Katie in their younger years. Her favourite Westwood girls whom she kept in touch with from childhood. Joan travelled to various parts of Canada visiting her children over the years. Even though her fear of flying remained, she always managed to make it happen.

Joan’s greatest joy in life was her kids, especially her grandchildren. She adored her granddaughter Avery beyond measure and was filled with excitement and love for two more grandchildren expected in the coming year. Joan never missed a milestone, always ready to shop, celebrate, and proudly brag about her grand babies.

Known for her fun and humorous presence, Joan was often described as the “life of the party” and affectionately known as “fun Auntie Joanie.” Always willing to help out with her great nieces and nephews over the years. Her laughter, kindness, and ability to make others feel welcome will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Above all, Joan will be forever missed by her best friend and lifelong companion, Wilfred (Bubbie) Mercier.

Joan leaves behind her beloved children: Daughters – Natalie (Sheldon McDonald), Katie (Noah Saunders) Son – Jess Walker (Isabelle) Granddaughter – Avery.

She is also lovingly remembered by her sisters: Stella Baxter, Patsy MacNeil, Janie (Bob Cormier), Cathy (Wally Tighe), Terri Walker, Debbie (Milorad Mrakovcic), Judy (Kevin George), along with many extended family members and dear friends.

Joan was predeceased by her parents, Catherine and Francis Walker; her sisters, Annemarie and Renee Walker; her brother, Vincent Walker, Brothers Inlaw, Richard Baxter, and Kye MacNeil.

In accordance with Joan’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date in the spring/summer, when family and friends can gather to honour and remember her.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the ICU nursing staff at Cape Breton Regional Hospital for the exceptional care, compassion, and comfort shown to our mom in her final days. Your kindness brought peace to both Joan and her family during an incredibly difficult time. A special and sincere thank you to Nancy, Monique, Marissa, Joanna P., Amy, and Ericka. Your care meant more than words can ever express, and you will always be remembered with gratitude.

Those wishing to honour Joan’s memory may do so by making a donation to the charity of their choice.
