Obituary

We the family announce the passing of James Ellison MacKinnon on August 23rd at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital in Sydney following a courageous battle with cancer. Born May 19th, 1954 he was the son of the late Bernard and Phyllis (LeBlanc) MacKinnon.

Jim lived and worked in his younger years across Canada and in various industries and fields. He eventually returned to Cape Breton and began a career in radio DJ’ing for CHER radio hosting the “Golden Oldies” radio show in the 80’s. His love of music made this a labor of love for him. He was enamored with music of all kinds from various genres, cultural backgrounds and had a vast array of vinyl records that he collected throughout his lifetime. Jim also had an avid interest in all things sci-fi and fantasy and he also had a soft spot for cats. Jim was blessed (or cursed depending on your opinion) with the gift of gab. He could talk to anyone about just about anything and people enjoying engaging in conversation with him.

Jim is survived by his sons Adam (Heather), Taylor (Samantha) and Zackary MacKinnon, step-sons Brent Morrison, Bryan and Blair MacLeod, his sister Mary Jane Landry and grandson Logan MacKinnon. He will also be remembered fondly by the mothers of his children Rose Morrison and Gina Spagnolotti. He leaves behind many nieces, nephews and extended family members.

Aside from his parents, Jim is predeceased by his brothers David and Bernie.

The family wishes to extend their thanks to the doctors and nurses of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital and VON for their care in his final days. Also special thank you to John LaRusic for being by his side during his time of illness.

Cremation has taken place and a private family service will be held at a later date.
