March 2, 1934 – February 16, 2026
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Herbert “Bull” Henry Young, who departed this world peacefully on Monday, February 16, 2026, at the age of 91 surrounded by his loving family members. Herbert was predeceased by his wife whom he adored, and shared a lifetime of love and partnership, Illona Young (Briggs); his beloved parents, Floyd Young and Annie (Reynolds) Young; his brothers, Fabian Young, Johnny Young, Richard “Dick” Young; his baby sister, Carmel Popwell (Young); and his cherished son, Eric Young.
Herbert “Bull” leaves behind his loving daughter, Lesley Clute (Young); his treasured granddaughters, Ashley (Ty) Clute and Brooke (Coleton) Clute; and his exceptional care team that became family to him. Throughout his many years, he left a lasting impression on the hearts and lives of countless family members, friends, colleagues, and neighbours.
Herbert started his journey of life on March 2, 1934, born and raised in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia. Herbert “Bull” Young grew up in the close-knit community of Number Two. He carried great pride in his roots and the place that shaped him, often returning to visit the neighbourhood reminiscing memories of his first family home.
Herbert “Bull” was an honest and devoted hardworking man whose strength and determination were evident from an early age. He fondly shared stories of beginning work at just six years old, delivering coal for the priest and nuns, delivering groceries by horse and buggy, all lessons that shaped his character for life. In time, he worked in the coal mines before finding his trade as a painter. Along the way, he met the love of his life, Illona. They married in 1960, beginning a beautiful and enduring journey side by side.
In 1964, they made the decision to begin a new chapter in Ontario, setting out together on a memorable road trip in their Volkswagen Bug. Shortly after arriving, Herbert “Bull” began his career with General Motors, starting in the forge where his strong work ethic quickly became evident. Through dedication and perseverance, he advanced to become a painter at GM, where he remained a loyal and hardworking employee until his retirement at the age of 55. In 2008, Herbert “Bull” and Illona moved back to Nova Scotia, settling in Glace Bay to enjoy their golden years surrounded by loved ones. They lived with their daughter Lesley and granddaughters Ashley and Brooke, a decision that enriched their lives in countless ways. Their home became a haven of love, laughter, and shared memories, where Herbert formed an unbreakable bond with his granddaughters and continued to strengthen his bond with his daughter, offering wisdom, encouragement, and unconditional love. Herbert loved spoiling his granddaughters, always building or creating something just for them. Whether a toy, a project, or something they dreamed of, he made it happen, giving them everything they could ever want with love and a smile. He had an especially special bond with his youngest granddaughter (Brooke), from the day she was born, they were inseparable; she was his baby.
Herbert will be remembered as a kind, gentle, and hardworking man with a heart that always looked out for others. Whether friend or stranger, he treated everyone like family, offering care, wisdom, warmth, and unwavering support. His generosity of spirit and genuine kindness left a lasting impression on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
In accordance with Herbert’s wishes, no formal service will be held. His family asks that you honor his memory by celebrating life, cherishing loved ones, and lending a helping hand in his name.
Herbert’s memory will forever live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and all those he touched during his incredible journey.
He will be dearly missed but never forgotten.
