IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Gundi
Viviani-Finch
May 14, 1942 – March 2, 2026
Gundi Viviani-Finch, born May 14, 1942 in Velbert, Germany, eldest daughter of Henrietta Wilma Hedwig Grenda (born Neveling) and Helmuth Grenda, passed away, March 2, 2026 in Sydney, Nova Scotia.
Like a river flowing into the receiving embrace of the sea with grace and dignity, she reached her destination naturally, according to her own wishes every step of the way. Right until the end of her days Gundi, despite her illness, spent her time as resiliently as she lived her whole life - independently, privately, calmly, artfully. She always had the creativity to mould wondrous art from natural materials. She became a highly individual artistic talent who made a happy living selling her creations to high-end galleries in the United States, mostly through craft trade shows. Glass, textiles, fabrics, yarns, found objects like rocks, driftwood, rusted tools have been her media of choice. Nature in all its manifestations and the passage of weathers and seasons have been her inspiration.
Gundi was born in Germany during the Second World War. At the age of eleven she emigrated with her parents to live in Chile. The eldest of three sisters (with Heidi Ruth Grenda and Barbel Grenda), she married Guillermo Viviani and gave birth to three daughters in Chile - Cristina Viviani (Peter Frey), Claudia Viviani (Pete Hill), and Andrea Butler (Les Butler). The family emigrated to Canada in 1971. In 1981 Gundi, by then divorced, met Peter Finch on a VIA Rail trans-Canada train at Lake Louise in the Rocky Mountains. They married in 1983. Almost seven years ago, the couple moved to Cape Breton to live with a magnificent view out on the open north Atlantic Ocean from the maritime cove of Little Lorraine. They recently celebrated forty two years of marriage. Gundi took immense pride in five grandchildren - Skye Butler, Lake Butler, Poppy Butler, Sofie Hill, and Brady Butler and enjoyed her visit with the three daughters and all grandchildren but Poppy last Spring in British Columbia.
Gundi and her surviving spouse, Peter Finch, spent over half her lifetime together, living in beautiful places, making wonderful friends, nurtured by lovely family, and travelling to soak up magnificent locales. Mexico, Chile, Guatemala, Spain, and Greece stand out as well as Bali where they first travelled together.
Flow free, Gundi, serene river, to the sea, into the ocean of love everlasting
