It is with great sadness we, the family, announce the passing of Greg Abbass of New Waterford on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Born in Kitchener, Ontario, on October 3, 1949. He was the proud son of the late George and Jean (MacChesney) Abbass of Sydney.
Greg was an employee of Sydney Steel Corporation until his retirement. He was an avid card player and enjoyed a good game of Tarabish where he met many friends. Greg will be sadly missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him.
Greg is survived by his only child, his beautiful daughter Felicia Abbass (Todd Schmitt). Greg could always be heard saying how proud he was of his greatest accomplishment, his daughter Felicia.
Greg is survived by his twin sisters Karen (John) Madinsky, Sydney, Cheryl (Halifax), and brother Deryck (Marlene), Howie Centre, niece Erin Martell Sydney, and nephew Jason MacInnis (Alberta)
Greg is survived by cherished grandsons Kevin and Todd Abbass (Jill Roach) and his little buddy, great grandson Easton MacDougall.
To the friends of Greg, thank you for your love, laughter, and countless memories. We wish to express our heartfelt gratitude to Ricky Breen (Mary MacLean), Sydney, Art (Margaret) Fennell, Sydney, Howie (Carol) Long, Sydney, Florence O’Neill (Sydney River), and Jean Merriam, New Waterford. Greg cherished their life-long friendships with each of you and was incredibly grateful for the bond you shared over the years.
Greg was predeceased by his wife Cathy (Arsenault) and brother Graham. As per his wishes, cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation or service. A private burial will be held at a later date.
Special thanks to 4D at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital over the years, Kelly MacDonald, student nurse Nick MacDonald, Kate Rigby, and all the student nurses. Special thanks to Dr. Stephaine LaPierre, Dr. Clay Butler, Dr. Hani Shaaban, and Dr. Ian Doyle. Greg loved to visit with you all. As well, to the wonderful staff of ICU and palliative care, thank you for the first-class treatment.
It was a great ride. I am either gone to that great tarbish game in the sky or the blast furnace down below. Either way, deal the cards, boys!
Love Greggy,
GO HABS GO!
