With great sadness, we announce the passing of George Herbert Barnes Sr. “Dragger”, on Sunday, January 16, 2022. Born in Harbour Breton, Newfoundland on November 15,1946. He was the son of the late James and Francis Barnes, was a father, brother, grandfather, great grandfather and father-in-law.
George is survived by his son Greg Barnes, son Chesley Barnes, daughter Elizabeth Barnes, son George Barnes Jr, daughter Lisa Barnes-Pelland, sister Barbara Barnes, multiple grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
George was employed by Marine Atlantic for over 32 years as a deckhand, 3rd mate and before that was a dragger on the lake boats at a very young age of 14. He was a handyman, building custom furniture for family and friends. He retired in 2007 but regretted it because he enjoyed being on the boats so much. Was a cat lover, loved new tech and computers. For his last 2 years, he lived with his son Greg Barnes and Glenda Donovan until his passing.
His final wishes were to be cremated and have his ashes put out to sea on the crossing from North Sydney to Port aux Basques.
Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of Forest Haven Memorial Gardens
You will be loved and missed for all time.
