Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we the family announce the passing of Francis James Woodman on February 26,2026 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.

He was affectionately known to many friends and family as “Brow,” “Woodie,” or “Mr. Francis”.

Born in 1942 during the height of the Second World War, Francis was a man of quiet strength and a dedicated worker. A true Cape Breton coal-miner who spent his career underground, working the seams at Broughton, No. 26 Colliery, Lingan, Phalen and the Prince Mine. Even after his mining days, Francis never quite retired from his feet. He was an avid walker and a familiar face in the community, often jokingly calling himself a "business man" as he collected recyclable bottles right up until the very end.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Elsie; his son, Darrell; and his daughter, Milissa, who was forever proud to be a "Coal Miner’s Daughter." He also leaves behind his son-in-law and dear friend, Derrick Kelly; his sister, Tina; his longtime friend, Billy MacPherson, and many many friends; as well as his faithful feline companion, Margie.

Francis was the son of the late Euphemia Woodman who passed while Francis was a young child. He was raised by and predeceased by Christina and Bertram Woodman; his brothers Edward and Bert; and his sisters Shirley and Jessie.

The family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to the incredible staff of 4C at the Cape Breton Regional for the compassion and friendship shown to Francis. A special thank you to Dr. Rose MacKay for her patience, comfort, and unwavering care throughout his journey.

In keeping with Francis’s wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation.

Francis lived his life with a straightforward spirit and a love for the simple things. After a long road and a life of hard work, his own famous words have finally come to pass:

“Okay, let’s go home.”
