Elizabeth "Bessie" Mary
McIntosh
Jan 1, 1948 — Nov 2, 2026
Glace Bay
It is with very heavy hearts, that we the family, share the passing of Elizabeth "Bessie" McIntosh (Oates), 78.
On November 2nd 2026 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Bessie passed peacefully with her daughter, Katherine, by her side.
Bessie was a New Year's baby, born January 1st, 1948 in Sydney, N.S.
After spending four decades building a life in Ontario, Bessie relocated to Glace Bay to be near her family and mother she adored. Bessie’s heart was as big as her personality, and she poured her energy into supporting those around her.
She made a lasting difference in the lives of many through her years as a sponsor and guest speaker for AA. Bessie’s dedication to her Union (Camco), and her healing hands in reflexology, impacted those around her.
On any given afternoon, Bessie could be found indulging in her absolute favorite hobby, happily playing the Lucky 777s machines at Membertou.
Bessie is survived by her daughter, Katherine, brother, Gary (Donna). She is also survived by two grandchildren, Tori (Dylan) and John (Tia). She also leaves behind her five great-grandchildren, Ayden, Isla, John Ethan, Mia, and Sophia. Bessie was predeceased by her parents, Catherine and Fred Oates, stepfather, Herbie; and brothers, Freddie, Wayne (Pam), and Leonard (Elaine).
Cremation has taken place at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens. The family will honour Bessie’s wishes and no service will take place. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Rett Syndrome, which is very near and dear to the family.
