Donald Charles Phillips, born December 16, 1949, passed away peacefully in Hospice Cape Breton on June 12, 2026, after a brief battle with cancer.

Donald, affectionately known as Doc, or Schultz, was born in Glace Bay, NS and raised in Homeville, NS by his parents Edie and Bill Philips.

Don had a love of drag racing dating back to the 1970’s, and was a dedicated member of the Cape Breton Drag Racing Association. He loved nothing more than spending time at the track with friends he made throughout the years. He raced with several vehicles over the years and even when things didn’t work the way they should, Don was still present at the track giving his all and making sure everything ran smoothly. Over two decades ago, he created a website and message board that was meant to unite racing enthusiasts and he was very proud of all that the website achieved. In 2024 he was inducted into the Maritime Motorsports Hall of Fame.

Don is survived by his partner of 46 years, Marie MacVicar, her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Spencer and sister-in-law Sue, nephews Kenzie and Connor, niece Leah, uncle Spencer and aunt Carol as well as many cousins.

Don was predeceased by his parents Edie and Bill and infant daughter Julianne.

The family would like to thank everyone that was involved in Don’s care during his illness; the palliative care team of doctors and nurses that visited Don at home, the EMTs and CBRH hospital staff, VON, and especially the doctors, nurses, staff and volunteers at Hospice Cape Breton, who made Don’s last days comfortable.

Keeping with Don’s wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation. Donations can be made to Cape Breton Hospice, or a charity of choice.
