Emblem

It is with broken hearts we announce the passing of Donald Joseph Gillis, age 77, on Wednesday, July 22nd, 2020 with his loving family surrounding him. Born, August 25th, 1942 in Sydney he was the son of John Gillis and Annie (MacNeil) Gillis.

Donald met Anne in Loch Lomond, they married in 1967 and they raised three daughters together, Susie, Donna and Cheryl. Daddy was always a hard worker, providing for his family while employed by Kaiser mine, Canada Post or cutting pulp. He enjoyed listening to fiddle tunes and a good cup of coffee with his buddies or just watching TV and spending time with Mommy. He never complained and was a gentle man but was always looking to give others a laugh. He was proud of his girls and their families and enjoyed spending time with his grandkids. Time with family was most important to him.

He was predeceased by wife, Anne Gillis, his parents, his brothers Raymond, Roy, Lloyd, and Vince. He is survived by his daughters Susan Tanner, Donna Simpson (James), and Cheryl Umba (Thierry). He has four grandchildren, Kaleigh Simpson, Ryan Tanner, Tyler Simpson and Gabrielle Umba. He is also survived by his brother, Peter Gillis, and sisters, Patricia Briand and Loretta Bradley (Aubrey).

The family wishes to thank EHS and the doctors and staff of both of the Emergency Department and An Cala. Special thanks to Dr. Coakley as well as the management and staff of Harbourstone Enhanced Care, specifically the staff on MacDougall Court for the love and care they provided to Daddy in the months he has lived there. You made it the next best thing to home for him and don’t forget, “they were lookin’ for ya”!

Donations in Donald’s memory can be made to The Alzheimer’s Society or to VON.

Cremation has taken place. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a service will be held at a later date.
