It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Derwin ‘Dode’ Dean Cartwright at the age of 65, on Saturday Nov. 17th, 2023 with the love of his life, Vivian Campbell by his side at the Palliative Care Cape Breton. Born in Whitecourt, Alberta to the late Vernice Cartwright-Kimzey, and the late Wesley Cartwright.
Derwin was a helicopter pilot/ operator in the oil industry in Alberta. He loved flying, nature, all outdoor activities, sitting around a fire in the backyard, barbecuing supper, no matter how cold it was outside. Derwin was blessed with the most wonderful family and amazing friends, Gary and Doug Cumberland who he grew up with and so many more.
Dode was survived by wife Vivian Campbell, daughter Courtney (Dave) Schappert, grandchildren; Oliver, Nixon, Foster and Olivia, step-children; Jason, Justin and Susan, other grandkids; Connar, Brody, Kenzie, Lily, Elliot and Gina, brothers; Ray (Lois), Jim, Kevin (Debbie) & David (Annette), all of Whitecourt, AB. Plus many cousins, nephews & nieces.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his son Matthew.
Derwin appreciated every phone call, visit and everything his friends and family, all who helped take care of him during his twenty month battle with his brain tumor. All the wonderful care he received while at the Hospice Cape Breton. He left there a miracle man to come home to die. We the family would like to Thank everyone, Hospice Cape Breton, Palliative Care and the Cancer Society, and all the medical staff that helped.
Cremation has taken place under the guidance of Forest Haven. A Celebration of Life will be held in Alberta with family and friends around a big campfire next summer.
Donation may be made to Hospice Cape Breton, Palliative Care Society or Cancer Society.
I believe Derwin is a bit of stardust
out there in the heavens,
Beyond the blue sky now.
I believe we will see him in the night sky,
shining and winking down on us,
stars are made for wishing
and our souls go on forever
so, I know I will see the love of my life,
Derwin Cartwright, in the night sky
And in all dragonflies,
Because they look like a helicopter
And when I become stardust too
Fly high my Love, the beautiful person
That you were!
