It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of David Brian MacKay, “The Painter”, at the age of 60. David was a son, a brother, a father and a friend to all who knew him.
Born in Baddeck in 1965 to Hugh MacKay and the late Margie MacKay (Hutchison). At the age of 8, his family moved to Shubenacadie, where he joined the local school hockey teams and earned his reputation as the “Head Hunter” defenseman. He made many friends during that time that lasted throughout his life. Although he loved his time in Shubie, his heart was always drawn to Baddeck, where he lived for the remainder of his life.
David travelled all over Canada working in various jobs. However, he was best known for his excellent painting skills and for making your driveway look new again with his painting and sealing businesses in Baddeck. An occupation which he later shared with his daughter. David left his mark on many structures around Baddeck. When you look at Kidston Island lighthouse, think of him.
David was smart, funny, kind and would give the “muscle” shirt off his back to help someone in need.
David is survived by his daughter Richelle (Ryan), granddaughter Paisley, grandson Gus, sister Shirley of Baddeck, brother Hughie Jr. (Patsy) of Stewiacke, father Hughie Sr. of Shubenacadie and nieces Trisha, Natasha and Keshia. Predeceased by his mother, Margie.
David was rich in this life because he had a sister who showed him unconditional love, a best friend who was there during every stage of his life (DG), a daughter whom he was so proud of and could never not tell anyone, “she is a Heavy Duty Operator”, pockets that always had cash and chocolate for his Pais and a butterscotch pudding for smiley Gus.
We would like to thank the special friends and Home Care workers who helped care for David in any way.
Cremation has taken place, and a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
