Anna
Poulakis
May 15, 1936 — Jun 20, 2026
It is with deep sadness that the family announces the passing of Anna Poulakis, age 90, of Sydney, Nova Scotia, who passed away peacefully at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital on Saturday, June 20, 2026, embraced by the love and care of her family.
Anna was born in 1936 in Athens, Greece, to Marousso and Athanasios Poulakis. In the early 1960s, Anna immigrated to Sydney with her mother and her brother, John, where they began a new life in Cape Breton.
For many years, Anna and her brother John worked at Koolex Cleaners, the well-known family enterprise associated with the Farmakoulas and Xidos families. Anna later established and operated Anna’s Sewing Centre on Charlotte Street, where she became known for her fine skill as a seamstress, her careful work, and her warm and familiar presence in downtown Sydney. Until her retirement approximately ten years ago, Anna was a well-known face among merchants, friends, customers, and relatives; always happy to stop, chat, and share a kind word.
Anna was a woman of deep faith, and was a faithful member of the Greek Orthodox community, regularly attending services at Sts. Anargyree Greek Orthodox Church in Glace Bay. Her Greek heritage was an important part of her life, and she will be fondly remembered for the wonderful Greek suppers and holiday feasts she prepared with such care and generosity.
Anna also had a lifelong love for her feline companions, who brought her great comfort and joy over the years.
Anna is survived by her loving nieces Antigonie Poulakis (David Jaques) and Ioanna Poulakis (Donnie Richards); her great niece, Katerina Poulakis; her great nephews, John Poulakis and Dimitri Poulakis; and Antigonie’s grandson, Karsyn Poulakis. She will also be deeply missed by Spyro Trifos (Shelley), to whom Anna was a formative caregiver and parent-like presence from early childhood. She will also be missed by her caring friend, Carol Bennett, and numerous friends and extended family members.
Anna was predeceased by her parents, Marousso and Athanasios Poulakis, and later by her beloved brother, John Poulakis, in 2021.
The family extends its most sincere gratitude to Dr. Baxendale, Dr. Wu, Dr. Poulos, and the nurses and staff of 4C Stroke Unit and the Palliative Care Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, for the compassion and care shown to Anna during her final days.
Cremation has taken place. In keeping with the wishes of Anna and her family, there will be no public service. A private family service will be held, with interment at Forest Haven Cemetery, Grand Lake Road, Sydney.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Sts. Anargyree Greek Orthodox Church, the SPCA Cape Breton, or charity of choice.
May her beautiful memory be eternal.
